Foster Care Program

Children with disabilities are up to 3.5 times more likely to have experienced abuse or neglect than their non-disabled peers, and when they enter the foster care system, they have unique needs. Envision’s Foster Care Program focuses on the wellness of each child and supports foster families in providing a safe, nurturing environment.

Our children range in age from infant to 18. They come from various backgrounds. Many are single placements, but some have siblings. Some may have developmental disabilities and/or emotional issues. Some have been victims of abuse or neglect. All are in need of the stability and guidance that a secure and loving home environment can provide.

“Being a foster parent is a blessing for me and the children. It is an honor. It makes me so happy.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Are foster placements permanent?

Our ultimate goal is to safely return children to their parents or primary caregivers. When that is not possible, our goal is to give these children permanency through adoption, guardianship or independent living.

Do you have to be married to become a foster parent or to adopt a child?

No, you do not. Some of our most successful parents are single. You are not required to have children of your own, and you do not have to own your own home. Renting is fine, as long as your home is safe and stable. You do have to be at least 21 years old and self-supporting. You must also pass a criminal background check.

Is that it?

Almost. The most important thing is being able to open your heart and home to a child who needs special attention, guidance and love. Beyond that, it helps to be patient and flexible and to possess a healthy respect for children and their biological families. You have to be curious and willing to learn about the special needs of your child and receive training. We also ask that you work as a team member with us and other professionals involved in the case.

What kind of support will I get? Is there medical coverage?

Absolutely. In addition to monthly compensation based on your child's special needs, you will receive medical coverage for your foster child and an allowance for his or her clothing and other personal essentials. For social and emotional backup, you will have 24-hour access to Envision staff and monthly support group meetings through our Foster Parent Advisory Council. You can even get respite care. Finally, we provide free, monthly comprehensive training. If you have ever thought about opening your heart and your home to a child in crisis, call us. We will answer any questions you have about specialized foster care, the licensing process and state requirements and regulations.

We know that being a foster parent isn't for everyone. But if you have a little patience, a little compassion and a desire to do something truly rewarding, maybe it's for you.
