Envision Unlimited at Access Chicago 2016

Access Chicago 2016

Envision Unlimited proudly participated in Access Chicago 2016, an annual exposition at Navy Pier sponsored by the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD). The event was buzzing with vendors and exhibitors with a wide variety of innovative products, services and programs, as well as recreational activities, all designed for people with disabilities. Envision Unlimited exhibited one of the largest booths, displaying client art for purchase and conducting a horticulture activity. Envision’s horticulture lead, Vera Videnovich, conducted a herb planting workshop for the attendees, allowing each participant to take home a potted herb.

The herb planting workshop showcased the important role of Envision’s Horticulture Program for our clients. Vera Videnovich gave booth visitors a unique opportunity to experience the therapeutic and stimulating benefits of gardening and to see the practical and responsible implications on our environment. This workshop invited guests to experience our comprehensive Horticulture program that teaches clients the basic principles of gardening, healthy living and meal preparation. Not only does this program offer important skills and benefits for Envision clients, but it also distributes their produce to local families and neighborhood farmers markets!

“It was wonderful to see our program participants from the Envision urban gardening program helping others plant the herb of their choice at our Spice It Up workshop during Access Chicago. There were so many smiles on so many faces as they took their plant home, along with a recipe card about how to use it. Everyone enjoys the feeling of nurturing and growing a plant.”

Our Division Directors Donna Ennis and Susan Gardner answered questions about Envision, offering informational packets and take-a-ways for booth visitors. A short film featuring Envision clients and programs was displayed on a large screen and several of our clients who visited the exhibit were proud to recognize themselves in the films. By the end of the day, several handmade horses had also been sold, ensuring more our artists’ work would find its way to the homes and offices of Chicago-area collectors. Throughout the expo, Access Chicago offered numerous ways for people with disabilities to pursue full and active lives, making their city accessible to them in an equitable way. Attendees included people with disabilities, family members, educators, as well as professionals who serve this community. They were able to participate in adaptive fishing, wall climbing, judo, adaptive golf, bowling and bingo. Exhibitors offered solutions for housing, employment, religion, community involvement, education, technology, recreation and more. The expo also offered therapeutic workshops, healthy cooking demos, various educational seminars and health screenings.

Envision Unlimited prioritizes accessibility for our clients in a number of ways. Whether it be maintaining and achieving health, finding job opportunities, pursuing education or other personal achievements, we consider it a critical part of our mission to help our clients live full and engaging lives. Envision opens doors for our clients to reach their highest potential, helping to achieve independence and high quality of living. The objective of our presence at Access Chicago was to offer enriching services to families in the Chicagoland area, and it was an honor and a joy to participate in this years MOPD’s Access Chicago event!
